This morning, @Choosesligo was taken on a preview exhibition tour of the Model (https://www.themodel.ie/) in advance of the Model reopening again on 23 July '20.
It has been a long few months since Covid19 kept us locked up in our own houses, but nothing is nicer than getting out again and admire art in an actual gallery. One of the aspects of the visit was to showcase how the Model will operate under social distancing guidelines. A well thought out plan was put in place where the Model was adapted to allow visitors to enjoy art while maintaining appropriate social distancing . All around the exhibition are little yellow feet highlighting where you should stand to get the best view of the art on display while still maintaining your distance from fellow visitors.
When the doors open up again on the 23 July, there are two major exhibitions. The first one is Jack Butler Yeats "A Thought of Sligo" which focuses on his work and how it was influenced by Sligo and the West of Ireland. The second exhibition is called "The Sea Around Us" , bringing you a multi-sensory experience of visuals and sound with as theme the Sligo shoreline and our relationship with the sea.
Entrance to the Model is still free, but you will be asked to check in upon arrival. The new Model opening hours will initially be Thursday to Saturday between 12pm and 4pm. Where this is the first phase of the Model reopening, further days and times will be added in due course. Also take note that entrance into the Model is from the Mall where exit will be via Connaughton Road.

To say the least, 2020 will be a year which will be mentioned in the history books. Where Covid19 has the world in here grip, all levels of business have been affected. But a sector which has definitely been affected most is the tourism sector.
And where European destinations are slowly opening up again for visitors, do we really want to go abroad this year? Busy airports and flights don't sound appealing, and you can be guaranteed that tourist destinations won't be the same either, so is it really worth while going away for a sun holiday? Have you considered a staycation in County Sligo, Ireland. We admit that the weather won't be always a balmy 30 degrees nor will there be many palm trees along the beach, but what we promise you is quiet beaches, beautiful forest walks and amazing scenery. Sligo is wild, it has amazing scenery and it is an outdoor adventurers paradise. The local hospitality sector will welcome you with open arms (or maybe not, but you will be welcomed with a smile and the perfect service from a safe 2 meter distance away). And the hospitality sector is probably the sector which has been hit the hardest during covid19, so by enjoying a staycation, you help these hard working businesses towards their recovery. So what can you expect when you stay in County Sligo?
Foodies will be spoiled for choice. The Sligo food scene has made a name for itself over the last few years, and Sligo Food trail (https://sligofoodtrail.ie/) treats you to an abundance of tastes, unexpected food experiences and freshly cooked food using only the best of local produce. And you can be sure that the local hospitality sector has implemented all required safety requirements allowing you to enjoy a scrumptious meal. But Sligo brings you so much more, with the Wild Atlantic on its doorstep, it isn't hard to see why Sligo is called an adventure paradise. From rock climbing to hiking, from kayaking to paragliding, County Sligo is an outdoor playground. And where it is home to one the world's best spots for big wave surfing, it is also the perfect location for splashing around and learning to surf. So when you decide to enjoy a staycation in County Sligo, embark on a new adventure (https://adventuresligo.ie/ ) .
The great thing about staying in County Sligo is the huge selection of accommodation. You can decide to get spoiled and book yourself into one of the local hotels, or decide to book a self catering accommodation. (https://www.choosesligo.com/accommodation.html ) . County Sligo might not be the most visited County or the most popular one with foreign visitors, but that allows you to enjoy unspoiled landscapes where you can just relax and enjoy that time with your family. From walking along the Sligo Way, an 80km long distance walking route to climbing Benbulben, Sligo's famous tabletop mountain , you will be spoiled for choice to enjoy the natural beauty of County Sligo. With an entire beach just to yourself, you mind find that social distancing comes easy in Sligo. Keeping the kids entertained is easy , where we might not have all our famous Sligo's events on this year , we are sure that they don't mind running towards the deep blue Atlantic, building a fort out of branches in one of Sligo's forests or discovering ancient caves once occupied by humans.
So we promise you you will enjoy your stay and have amazing memories to look back upon. if you are looking for further information on County Sligo, visit the following websites: www.choosesligo.com www.sligotourism.ie www.gostrandhill.com www.sligohub.com www.southsligotourism.ie Both Strandhill and adventure sligo where both in the running for the 2019 Eden Award. This afternoon, it was announced that Strandhill were the overall winner of the European Destination of Excellence award with Adventure Sligo being runner-up. So first of all, we would like to wish both a huge congratulations from the team at Choosesligo, a well deserved award for all the hard work they put into it. So what is the Eden award? EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) is a project that promotes sustainable tourism development models across the European Union. National competitions take place every year and result in the selection of a tourist “Destination of Excellence” for each participating country.
Strandhill Community Development Association was one of four Irish destinations shortlisted under this year’s theme of excellence is Health and Well-Being Destination tourism. Strandhill has a strong community spirit, one where businesses and people alike work together on establishing Strandhill as the place to be. From a tourism perspective, Strandhill is a scenic village which has been attracting surfers, daytrippers,... for a long while now. The village which is located along the shores of the Wild Atlantic has many established businesses who are all after one thing, health and wellness. From world renowned Voya to the well known Strandhill People's Market in the airport hangar to the fabulous food on offer, Strandhill is and will always be on the map as a must visit location. |
