Deerpark Forest

Back to Forests

How to get there:

Take the N16 from Sligo. At the traffic lights past the hospital,  take the R286 to Dromahair. After approximatly 500 mtr from this junction take minor road to Calry . Site is approx 5 km from this turn. You will have to pass Calry church, the forest is then approximatly 1 km after the church on your right.

Facilities:

Ample car park area
Picnic area

Landscape:

Mature conifers.Fantastic views towards Sligo town & Knocknarea. The main interesting point is the presence of a court tomb. The court tomb is called such a way as the burial chambers opened off a semi-circular or oval court, usually at the front of the monument. The court was usually used as a site for rituals linked to the burials. The deerpark court tomb is unusual as the court is in the middle rather than at the front.

The tomb was erected during the Neolithic period around 3000BC
