Description
The Union Rock Walk is a linear trail beginning at the Union Wood car park near Union Foods, where you’ll find plenty of parking and picnic facilities. Follow the red arrows to stay on the route.
The trail passes through Union Wood Special Area of Conservation, one of the largest remaining native oak woodlands in the region. Extensive conservation work has been carried out here, and the area is fully fenced — not to keep people out, but to protect young oak saplings from the many deer that roam the forest. It’s common to spot deer crossing the path, adding a lovely wildlife element to the walk.
The climb to the summit of Union Rock is now made easier by a newly installed wooden boardwalk. From the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views toward Knocknarea and Benbulben, two of Sligo’s most iconic mountains.
This route combines peaceful woodland, wildlife encounters and a rewarding viewpoint, making it a favourite for walkers of all levels.
