Description
Cliffoney Beach — also known as Trawalua Beach — is a magnificent four‑mile stretch of soft, golden sand lying on the western side of Mullaghmore Head, just south of Roskeragh Point. It’s a beach with a wonderfully open, wild feel, yet it offers different experiences depending on where you wander.
The right‑hand side of the beach, more secluded and sheltered by rocks, is popular with naturists who appreciate its privacy and natural beauty. The left‑hand side is a favourite for families and is also used by a local horse‑riding school, whose riders can often be seen crossing the sand with the Atlantic as their backdrop.
Access to the beach adds to its charm. The only way in is on foot, starting from the football pitch just outside Cliffoney village. A small stream guides you through fields and dunes until the beach suddenly opens out in front of you — a rewarding reveal after a gentle walk.
While the beach is stunning, it’s important to note that strong currents are present here, making it unsuitable for swimming. Still, the vast sands, dramatic views, and peaceful atmosphere make Cliffoney Beach a place to explore, unwind, and enjoy the raw beauty of North Sligo’s coastline.
