Description
The Glen is probably one of Sligo's best hidden treasures. The Glen itself is a narrow, deep chasm on the south flank of Knocknarea.
The first interesting part is finding the entrance. It is well hidden and covered by vegetation. There is place for approx. 2 cars on the left side of the road at a small well just across from the entrance. There is a bigger car park a bit higher up the hill on the right. When you have found the gate, you have won half the battle.
Enter the gate and walk along the worn path towards the Glen.
The vegetation is lush and you could be forgiven to think that you are somewhere in the jungle.
The path towards the Glen is on the left side covered by plants, moss and trees, some of which have fallen across the path. On the right side is a small wall and forestry mainly hiding the views towards Ballysadare Bay.
A lot of water, coming down from Knocknarea, drips down the rocks on the left side and keeps the path damp, even on a dry day.
The Glen itself is spectacular. The 20m high cliffs on either side overgrown by ivy, hanging vines and ferns make it into the most tranquil spot you can imagine. The huge trees growing in the Glen form a huge canopy covering the Glen from all sides.
Note: The Glen is located on private land. Where access is allowed, respect the land , keep animals on a leash,...
