Sruth In Aghaidh An Aird

Back to running/walking trails

Description:

The Sruth In Aghaidh An Aird walk is the newest walk in Co.Sligo. The trail is 1.2 km in length with an ascent of 120m. The start is at a newly build car park at Glencar lake. On top of the trail is a loop with multiple viewing points towards Glencar lake and the Devils Chimney (Sruth In Aghaidh An Aird). The walk up the trail takes approx. 30 to 40 minutes where the walk down to the car park takes approx. 20 minutes.

There are multiple steps on the trail and it won't be possible to do the walk with prams or wheelchairs. The trail passes over private land and it is thanks to the kindness of the owners that this trail was made. Dogs need to be kept under under control as their are donkeys, hens,... along the trail.

At 150m, the waterfall is listed as Ireland's highest waterfall. The water doesn't flow the whole year. It is being reduced to a small trickle during dry periods. The name Sruth In Aghaidh An Aird means Stream against the height. When the wind blows from the south west, the water often blows upwards and back over the edge, hence the name.

Of particular interest is the yew trees which grow up against the flanks of the steep cliff edge. It is believed these are the oldest in Ireland, some of which may be 1000 years old
