Description
The walk starts at the RNLI station nearby the "Waiting on the shore" statue.
Follow the coastal path with gives views as far as the Ox mountains and the Metal man, a 3.7 meter guardian statue placed offshore by local seafarers in 1821 which serves as a light marker for ships. When you meet up with the road again, head towards Rosses Point car park where you go down towards the second beach. Walk along the beach as far as you can.
Rosses point is a safe, sheltered beach which is always very busy with open water swimmers, walkers,...Getting to the end of the beach, you have to cross a small stream. Just after the stream, head towards the dunes and cross through them until you reach the golf course.
Be very mindful here not to disturb the golfers. Stay on the path which follows the edge of the coast and which opens up towards an amazing selection of scenery. Views towards Knocknarea , Lissadell House & Benbulben are some of Sligo's landmarks which you can see from here .
Along the path, which meanders along the coast and through the dunes, you will discover an amazing selection of flora during the summer season.
Once you have gone around the headland, you will see Lower Rosses in front of you.
Lower Rosses is a dune complex and sandy plain which is surrounded on both sides by water. But at low tide, the water makes way for extensive beaches which are ideal for a run, a relaxing picnic,...
At low tide, you can also walk to the lighthouse , " a white cabin on 4 wooden pillars".
The area is also popular with kitesurfers which can gather sometimes serious air while jumping.
After you have gone around Lower Rosses through the dunes or along the beach, head back the same way you came.
