Description
Lough Gill is a lake which is mainly situated in Co. Sligo, but some of it is in Co. Leitrim. The lake itself is approximately 8km in length and 2 km wide.
The water leaves the lake and runs towards the sea as the Garavogue river which runs through the town centre of Sligo. The picturesque lake is surrounded by forests like Hazelwood, Dooney Rock and Slish Wood, all providing the perfect backdrop for some fabulous walks. The lake contains a lot of small and some larger islands, including Beezies or cottage Island which was inhabited until 1951. Another island made famous by William Butler yeats's poem is the Isle of Innisfree.
