Description:
The Garavogue River start from Lough Gill and runs through Sligo town into Sligo bay. The original name of the river is Sligeach , a name that means "abounding in shells". It was this name that was given to the town that developed along the banks from the 13th Century. The pre-tidal portion of the river is only 3.2 km long making it possibly Ireland's shortest significant river. The estuary of the river carries on for aanother 6.4km to the village of Rosses Point. This estuary allows ships up to 10,000 tons to navigate as far as Sligo town.

Sea trout: 1st January to 30th September
Brown trout: 15th February to 30th September
Method: All legal methods allowed, however catch and release or a quota system may be in place at times. upstream from N15 allowed, from the bridge to the estuary fly only.

The Garavogue is predominantly fished on the east side of Sligo town, close to where it flows from Lough Gill. It can produce some good spring and grilse fishing, and late evening fishing in July-September can yield good sport for sea trout anglers. The system may be subject to catch and release restrictions, or a quota system, and anglers are advised to check with IFI-Ballina before angling.
